A Real Pain

Written, produced, directed and played by the talented Jesse Eisenberg, it's a subtle movie that eventually carves deep into your heart, with extreme grace and wit. Kieran Culkin is pretty good, but I frankly couldn't understand how he could have deserved an Academy Award for this role.

"Exercise of style" is often a pretty abused expression to indicate a movie (or else) that is a sort of showoff of the director: in this case, unfortunately, it's totally appropriate. It's not a failure (Silvio Orlando's performance is monumental and the visual aspect is awesome), but Sorrentino's approach, in my opinion, has undertaken an insubstantial direction. Mark: 6.5 / 10
